Happy Strawberry Season, soo yummy. We are very lucky to live in an area where organic strawberries are grown right in our backyard. Make sure to stock up your freezer, jam jars and your belly with local strawberries.
Also Monday June 21st is Summer Solstice and we have all been invited to participate in a drum circle Monday evening at 7pm at Geddes park, please see the flyer attached.
This week we were able find 7 items from Ontario including Leaf lettuce from Tiverton and Strawberries from Bervie.
“People wander in the supermarket among chemical frozen
pies over processed skillet dinners nutrition less snack foods
soft drinks in throwaway bottles.
In the wilderness hold fast vegetables from sun-warmed gardens,
protein-rich beans, oven-fresh whole-grain breads,
home-canned fruit in Mason jars.”

The Dirt January 5th, 2010
Happy New Year, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. We have some great food ready for 2010, being healthy never tasted as good as this.
We now have a food pick up place in Kincardine, Port Elgin and Southampton, if you know anyone who might like to try some organic produce please help spread the word.
We are hitting the time when supplies of Canadian items have dwindled, slowly more food is from farther reaching places. Still, it is amazing that this far into winter we have 5 Ontario products. And the constant cycle continues as we are already meeting with local Bruce county farmers to prepare for the spring, with seed & garden planning. If you have a favorite food that might grow around here and is hard to find, why not let me know and I can pass that information on.
As local support catches on and spreads, the amount of variety will too, soon the new term “Locavore” might be an everyday word with a larger porportion of our food coming from our own back yards for a longer season.
Please feel free to ask questions, state any concerns, or vocalize your delight. Thank You and Enjoy!!

***NEW*** We now have a Southampton pick up location every other week starting October 6th!!!
It is fall and things are cooling down on farms all over Ontario. Thanksgiving is coming up and things are slowing down. Which leads me to think about the slow food movement which believes that
“Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.” www.slowfood.com
With slow food in mind there will be food fit for thanksgiving meals in your box next week; apples, pumpkin, turnips, and more.
Also, there are a few local Turkey farmers in this area with free run organic birds for sale. They need to be preordered and come in many sizes, fresh or frozen. If you are interested in ordering one please ask and I can get you more information. This Thanksgiving make your dinner special by including lots of local ingredient in your family meal.

Happy Equinox. Today is the first day of fall, local organic apples are in abundance. If your apples have a whiteish look it is a natural clay that is sprayed on to deture insects. Give them a good wash and enjoy.
If you received a Keitt Mango in your box, they are ripe and ready to eat when they turn Green on the outside.
The tomatoes in your box are a heritage/heirloom variety, they come in many different sizes and colors. Enjoy the variations in flavor.
The next food box will be September 29nd

Too hot to cook in the kitchen? Pack a fruit and vegetable filled picnic and head to the beach. Or make cold gazpacho soup and enjoy it on the deck.
Pickling season has arrived and if you would like to order large quantities of organic Ontario grown produce to can, such as cucumbers, beets, tomatoes, and more; please let me know. The smell of a newly opened jar of tomatoes in January is delightful.
The next food box is on September 1st. Hopefully corn will be ready!

Strawberries!! Summer is officially here on both the calendar and on your plate (if they make to your plate); Organic Strawberries from Bruce County. I can taste Strawberry shortcake as I am writing this, tea biscuits strawberries and whip cream with no extra sugar needed, as the strawberries are so sweet.
This week 14 items are from North America, 7 from Ontario, 2 of them from right here in Bruce County, and 2 from Mexico/Central/South America.
The Dirt, Volume 9, June 16th, 2009
The first thought that comes to mind is: What is a Pluot? A new unheard of organic fruit! I simply had to try one, I hope you like them too. A Pluot is a Plum Apricot cross, they are slightly softer and more flavourful than a plum.
Next week will see local organic Kincardine Strawberries in everyone’s food box!!!.
This week 13 items are from North America, 6 from Ontario, 2 of them from right here in Bruce County, and 4 from Mexico/Central/South America.
Thank You & Hope you enjoy!!

Spring feels chilly around here and garden plants everywhere are growing slowly and hoping for some heat. Like the hot heat of the sun in Ecuador, where our bananas were grown. These bananas are Organic and Fair-Trade certified. We will be offering fairly traded produce whenever available. Fair-trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Minimum wage in Equador is $7 US a day!
“Think Local, Act Globally”
For all you gardeners and fruit lovers we will be starting to offer fruit boxes beginning next week June 9th . Our Regular Mixed fruit/vegetable boxes will remain the same. This week 13 items are from North America, 6 from Ontario, and 2 from Mexico/South America. (And possibly Kincardine grown Onion Greens from The Ark Farm)
